Polyurea Coatings and Sealants

What is Polyurea?

Polyurea is a protective coating, a fast setting two component system.  It is derived from a reaction of two components – a polyisocyanate and a resin blend.

In simpler terms, it’s the process of fusing two chemical components together under heat and pressure to give a finished protective lining or coating on a specific surface. It is specifically designed to protect assets and substrates.

What are some common applications for polyurea?

The spray on bed liner, for personal and commercial trucks, is one of the most well-known uses. Polyurea is used in commercial and industrial applications. Polyurea is used in almost every industry imaginable.

We at Precision have been trained and certified by the inventor of polyurea himself.

Polyurea is used in:

        • Bridge decks
        • Transportation tunnels (Boston tunnel)
        • Food grade applications in the sugar cane storage facilities as a liner
        • Sewage containment, secondary containment, spill containment
        • Oil industry for tank linings
        • Dallas Love airport in the parking ramp
        • Shop floors, commercial flooring, industrial flooring and joint sealing.
        • can also be applied to SprayFoam Insulation in roofing applications

Polyurea is made to spec each job requiring a coating system. There is polyurea made for concrete applications, various metals from aluminum to various grades of steel, wood substrates, and fiberglass.

Water treatment plants and potable water containment can also benefit from polyurea sprayed directly to geotextile fabric.

Polyurea is a fantastic solution for protections in high abrasive applications. It is also commonly used on flat roofs to give a waterproof barrier.  Special polyurea is used in swimming pool liners.

Polyurea joint fillers and sealants are often used in major box stores that have polished cement floors.   Joint sealants are also being used in residential applications like driveways and patios.  Additionally, sealing basements with polyurea, both in new construction and in existing, will prolong the life of your home and protect it from potential water damage.

What are the benefits to polyurea?

Polyureas have a gel time (dry to the touch) of 5-12 seconds, depending on the application. They also have a cure time of 2-24 hours, minimizing the down time of the client’s business.

Polyurea can be applied to metal, wood, concrete, foam and spray foam for many different types of applications.

Polyurea has a hard tensile strength, which is the elasticity to stretch.  Unlike epoxy coatings, polyurea will remain intact should the surface underneath crack.
